Texas Rep. Charlene Ward Johnson (D-Houston) spoke to the media over the weekend during the Education Leadership Policy Convening in Atlanta, outlining plans to protect Houston students from the federal government shutdown. From school meals to Title I support, she emphasized that Texas is prepared to tap into its rainy day fund to temporarily fill the gaps left by stalled federal funding.
However, she warned that this safety net is not indefinite. If the shutdown drags on, critical programs like Head Start, after-school services, and community partnerships could face severe disruptions—potentially leading to layoffs, reduced access to technology, and fewer resources for students who need them most.
