This Texas high school sports team just smashed a national record. Here’s how they did it.
A Texas high school boy’s basketball team is literally balling this week as they celebrate their record-breaking win.
During a Feb. 10 game, Fayetteville High School not only beat Buckholts High School 120-25, but scored an astonishing 40 three pointers, beating the previous National Federation of State High School Associations record. Meadow Heights High School in Patton, Missouri previously held the record since 2006, when they scored 36 three pointers.
For those who aren’t sports savvy, three pointers are what they sound like: shots successfully made from behind the three-point line on the basketball court that are awarded three points. For high school, the arc of the line is 19.9 feet from the center of the basket.
The 120 points scored by the team was made completely of three pointers, and if you think this was by accident, think again.
“We gave ourselves the goal that we were going to try to break it,” Fayetteville head coach Jake Diggs said to the Fayette County Record. “The guys were pumped.”
The team had previously scored 14 three pointers against Buckholts High School in a different game, and Diggs figured they had a good chance at beating this. Just for fun, he also looked up the state and national records to see if the team could beat them as well.
Attendees might not have even known they were watching history in the making.
“I think they just thought we were shooting a lot of threes,” Diggs said.
Attempting three pointers is nothing new for the team—this season alone, they’ve made 321 of 961 attempts, according to MaxPreps.
The Fayetteville High School Lions currently rank at number eight in the state, and have games scheduled for Feb. 17 and 20.
