If a bunch of international travel isn’t quite in the budget this year—and honestly, same—the next best thing is trying out new foods from different cultures. Yes, Texas is known for its barbecue and its Tex-Mex dishes, but we all know a tasty Kartoffelpfannkuchen can be life-changing.

La Cacerola Colombia Cuisine

Address: 580 W Arapaho Rd., Suite 130, Richardson, TX 75080

Columbian

$20-$30

The national dish of Colombia is bandeja paisa so start there, and if you’ve never had an arepa, a corn-based empanada, get one! Feeling more adventurous? Try the blood sausage known as marcella.

King Tut

Address: 1512 W Magnolia Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76104

Egyptian

$10-$20

You’ll find many of your classic Mediterranean foods here like kofta and falafel with a few additions. Egyptian pizza? Immediately, please!

DelCiano Pinoy Cuisine

Address: 6320 U.S. 287 Frontage Rd., Suite 108, Arlington, TX 76001

Filipino

$20-$30

Kare Kare and Lumpia (think spring roll but better) are on the menu here. Patrons like the crispy pork belly and get the refreshing Halo Halo, which has a base of crushed ice, evaporated milk or coconut milk plus lots of other fixings, for dessert.

Bigdash Icecream & Pastries

Various Locations

Middle Eastern

$10-$20

In the spirit of trying something new, order the knafeh, a cheesy, nutty, sweet cornbread of sorts. Walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews—this is not a nut-free establishment! Take some mini pastries home pastry like fancy fingers or pistachio crowns.

Kuby’s Sausage House

Address: 6601 Snider Plaza, Dallas, TX 75205

German

$10-$20

Kuby’s is a restaurant that doubles as a European market. Create a sausage plate from 10 different types of sausage, get your Schnitzel and deli sandwiches, too. Don’t forget the Kartoffelpfannkuchen! (Oh, that’s a potato pancake.)

Queen of Sheba

Address: 14875 Inwood Rd., Addison, TX 75001

Ethiopian

$20-$30

Many cultures believe eating with your hands gives you a more intimate connection with your food and the people you’re eating with, so prepare for a higher level of connection at Queen of Sheba. Scoop up savory stews with your crepe-like injera and finish your meal with Ethiopian coffee.

Taste of Poland European Tavern

Address: 2301 Central Expy #155, Plano, TX 75075

Polish

$20-$30

For the most part, Polish cuisine is all about the meat. You can’t go wrong with soups and stews and our good friend the kielbasa. Dive into the popular beet and meat stock soup, Borscht, and, for the love of potatoes, order some pierogies. They’re dumplings with mashed potato, and oftentimes with cheese filling.

Kanny’s Restaurant & Lounge

Address: 9780 Walnut St., #138, Dallas, TX 75243

$20-$30

Nigerian

The jewel of Nigerian cooking is the jolloff rice, flavorful rice you can’t stop eating. This is a must-have item! The flavor continues with stews and soups for spice lovers. And if you ever wanted to try goat, this is your moment. You’ll easily see why it’s a popular protein for much of the world.
