For many, it’s the season for whipping up pies and trying new cake recipes— and for others, it’s the season to pay somebody else to do that. The metroplex has some amazing bakers, some with established shops and others tackling orders in private kitchens. As you’re planning your holiday parties and get-togethers, patronize these beloved local minority-owned bakeries throughout DFW.

La Casita Bakeshop

580 W Arapaho Rd. #154, Richardson, TX 75080

This James Beard Award-nominated DFW chain offers wholesale pastries and breads, as well as catering. Besides their Richardson bakeshop, they have several other cafe locations across the metroplex. Check out their work on their Instagram page

Loft 22 Cakes

106 E Daggett Ave., Fort Worth, TX 76104

Led by Le Cordon Bleu Alumni Chef Tareka Lofton, Loft 22 Cakes  specializes in multi-layered cakes, and ships nationwide, while also offering local customers cookies, peach cobbler, and butterscotch banana pudding. Chef Lofton was featured on Amazon Prime’s Dr. Seuss Baking Challenge and went viral for her toilet paper cake in the thick of the pandemic.

The Sweet Thumb Confections

The catering business takes cake pops to a whole other level with detailed towers and creative pops for all occasions. You can order customized donuts and cookies, as well as iced rice krispies treats, mini cheesecakes, and chocolate-dipped oreos. The owner is currently taking Thanksgiving orders, showcasing a special menu

Uncle Willie’s Pies

305 N Hampton Rd., DeSoto, TX 75115

You may have seen this bakery on the Food Network or in your favorite wedding magazine — if so, you  know that Uncle Willie’s is so much more than pies. Elaborate wedding cakes, peach cobbler cups, and pie with and without sugar, this shop has you covered this season and beyond. And who is Uncle Willie? Willie Pettigrew is the founder and US Navy Veteran who spent his life cooking around the world. Check out the menu here

Kessler Baking Studio

1129 N. Beckley Ave., Dallas, TX 75203

For cookies and shortbread, you go to Kessler. This adorable shop led by James Beard Nominee for Outstanding Baker, Clyde Greenhouse, has ready-made cookies, or you can also grab packages of dough from their freezer. They also create thick-cut brownies and blondies and do custom cookie cakes. See the ‘bowtie baker’s  menu here

Make winter mornings even sweeter with an order of cinnamon rolls from Honey Bunch Bake Shop. This family-run business focuses on cupcakes, sweet breads, and iced bundt cakes. There’s also a large selection of mini and full-size pies, with flavors like pistachio and white chocolate.

Grace Tiers Bakery

7901 Mid Cities Blvd. Ste. 212, North Richland Hills, TX 76182

For any occasion, including holidays, Grace Tiers will make custom cakes for your parties and get-togethers. The bakery received a 2024 “Best Of” award by Fort Worth Magazine. See their unique creations on their Instagram page

Bakery Noire

Bridgette Brouillette, owner of Bakery Noire, is a Dallas baker who focuses on cookies, specifically macarons. Her macarons are works of art, capturing cartoon characters, words, and detailed drawings— whatever the client can dream of. Check out her gallery and Instagram pages for more of her work.

BigDash

Big Dash is a couple-run bakery with four locations across the DFW. They specialize in Middle Eastern pastries like various kinds of  baklava, kinafa, and philo pastry rolls. They also carry various flavors of the booza, viral stretchy Arabic ice cream with a thick, elastic texture. Order pastrt boxes or ice cream logs for your next event.

Mz G’s House of Pies

2315 Sutter St., Dallas, TX 75216

From sweet potato, chess, buttermilk, and pecan pies, Mz G is a great baker to call during the holiday season. Gazetta Anderson’s business was inspired by her grandmother, known for her sweet potato pie. Now she features that, among other flavors, to offer North Texans the comforting sweets from their childhoods. Not into pie? She’s got 7Up, coconut cream, and strawberry cakes, too.

Cake Bar

2629 N. Stemmons Fwy. Ste. 101, Dallas, TX 75207

You’ve probably already heard of this bakery, because when you Google “Cake shop Dallas,” it comes up first. Expect more than a dozen cake flavors to choose from. Folks stopping in might just grab a slice, but full cakes are always available. I would order in advance though, as it’s a very popular bakery. The bakery also caters for large parties, so inquire about that on your next visit.

Cookie Society

Cookie Society, located in Addison, Frisco, and Southlake, was founded by a retired Kansas City Chiefs guard and his wife. Their big, buttery cookies landed on Oprah’s Favorite Things list in 2020 and now ships nationwide. Order as a gift or surprise your family with a box from one of DFW’s most celebrated bakeries.
