In a significant move toward sustainable urban transportation, Dallas is pedaling into the future with a new bicycle infrastructure plan. Though the city is already recognized as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by The League of American Bicyclists, the City Council‘s adoption of the 2025 Dallas Bike Plan will create an even more bike-friendly metropolis while addressing climate change concerns.

New bike plan prioritizes safety and accessibility
The newly approved plan, which updates the previous 2011 version, aims to develop an extensive network of bike lanes and infrastructure that welcomes cyclists of all experience levels. The initiative represents a major evolution from the city’s first bike plan established in 1975.
District 6 Councilman Omar Narvaez emphasized the environmental significance of the plan, telling Dallas City News, “City Council has made a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fighting climate change. One of the ways of doing that is to reduce the number of people driving in cars or by themselves.”
Community-driven development and implementation
A key feature of the 2025 Bike Plan is its flexible, phased approach to network expansion. The plan focuses on:
– Connecting existing network gaps
– Creating links to trails and transit systems
– Expanding infrastructure in densely populated areas
– Improving bike access near schools
To ensure continued community involvement, the city will create a permanent bicycle advisory committee in the next few months. Dr. Gus Khankarli, director of the Dallas Transportation and Public Works Department, emphasized the comprehensive nature of the initiative: “We know that getting more people to bike isn’t just about building a network. This plan integrates with our multi-modal system and gives us a set of key action items that should be targeted over the next five to ten years.” For more information on this exciting initiative, the complete Dallas Bike Plan can be accessed at www.dallasbikeplan2025.org.
