The Get-Lit: Adult Book Fair is taking the Dallas-Fort Worth area by storm. Here’s everything you need to know about these exciting events.

Picture this: It’s a beautiful spring day. You’re wearing your favorite outfit. You got one of the good sandwiches for lunch. You have a crisp $5 bill in your pocket, and it’s your turn to browse the Scholastic Book Fair. What could possibly be better than that?

If, like me, you’ve been chasing this exact feeling since adolescence, you’ll be equally delighted to learn that one local author is bringing this dream to life for adults across Dallas-Fort Worth. Rachel Lewis founded the Get Lit: Grown-Up Book Fair as a way to bring people together to shop, eat, drink, and discuss books. “It is the nostalgia of an elementary school book fair but we have leveled it up to adults. Kids are welcome and they can come, but it’s really focused on the grown ups. Kids have all their fun things, we need something fun for us, too,” Lewis told Texas Today.

And fun is exactly what every Get Lit: Grown-Up Book Fair includes. Each event is hosted at a different brewery or distillery in DFW and sells a variety of books, merchandise, jewelry, trinkets, food, beverages, and more. Local authors have the chance to highlight their books and bring them to a wider audience, and readers have an opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals. For Lewis, this was the key element of her idea. She said she previously worked in public education and loved going to the book fair with her students, but when she transitioned from that career into being a writer instead, she was struck by how lonely and isolating writing can be.

Thus, Get Lit: Grown-Up Book Fair was born! Lewis knew it would appeal to readers and worked to steadily get the word out and build a reputation for being a welcoming space. “My hope is that you just experience this amazing community. We have an amazing book community in the DFW area. We have a ton of people who love to read and who love to be around other readers,” she said. If you want to get in on the action, you’re in luck—the next event takes place in Fort Worth in just a few days.

The next book fair is scheduled for March 29

The next Get Lit: Adult Book-Fair is scheduled for March 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Blue Flag Distillery, located at 701 Galveston Ave in Fort Worth. Events are free to attend. As Rachel Lewis put it on Texas Today, “You can get a beer and come and shop some local vendors and local authors.” That emphasis on everything being local is a key component of the book fairs. Lewis is giving nearby businesses and artisans an opportunity to sell their goods in addition to helping bring the book community together for a low-key occasion.

If you can’t make it out on March 29, don’t panic. There’s another book fair scheduled for April 10 at The Hub in Allen from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will be Get Lit’s first official “after dark” event, and additional details are forthcoming, but you can keep an eye on their Instagram page to stay up-to-date on everything between now and then. Regardless of when you go, I hope you have a wonderful time connecting with your fellow readers and that you get at least two (or 10) books to add to your TBR while you’re there.
