In November, I reported on our hometown bagel shop trekking to the Big Apple and winning it all. Starship Bagel won the top prize in the 2025 New York BagelFest, a competition that brings professionals from around the world. But long before this latest win, they’d been racking up awards, and more importantly, winning the love of locals.
Trying the kosher shop for myself has been a long time coming. Although the French onion and mushroom shawarma from the competition aren’t available for purchase, I tried their top-selling combos: scallion schmear on an everything bagel and honey almond schmear on a cinnamon raisin. I paid about $12 for both of these, completely valid when I got two fresh, hunky bagels with tons of cream cheese on each. A quick squeeze test to check the density, and I tore into them.

I got the scallion everything with pickled onions and cucumbers on top, delivering a creamy, bouncy, crunchy bite that was delightful. More bites. More bites. The flaky sea salt on this bagel is perfection. The scallion schmear wasn’t too potent, which I was thankful for because that everything bagel would be a star on its own, even three days old.
My sweet choice really surprised me. I’m not a fan of raisins, but I wanted to try what the regulars love, and after the first bite, I didn’t think about the raisins again. Once again, the bagel was bouncy with beautiful air pockets, but this time, I think the schmear was the star. That cream cheese was chunky with bursts of sweetness and chopped almonds that had lost about half of their crunch, which made for a smooth and pleasant bite.
Listen, there are no more words for this delightful experience. Check out my video to see it yourself, and check out Starship Bagel at their downtown Dallas, North Dallas, or Lewisville locations. National Bagel Day is Thursday, Jan. 15—celebrate properly.
