Seen on Hulu, sipped in North Texas: Is Swig worth the hype?

In this week’s Don’t Sleep On feature, I checked out a soda shop I didn’t know I needed.

Welcome to Don’t Sleep On, a weekly series in my newsletter every Monday where I shout out DFW events and businesses I think you should try. Have a suggestion? Email me.

If you’ve ever watched the Hulu show “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” you’ve probably heard about Swig. It’s a soda shop chain founded in Utah that allows you to create your own dreamy soda combinations. Mormons typically don’t drink alcohol, so in Utah visiting the shop has become just as customary as meeting your friend at a bar for a margarita.

There are now 100 Swig locations nationwide, with more than a dozen in North Texas, so I had to see what all the hype is about. I’m not a big soda person, but the combinations sounded like they were worth the sugar rush. The menu features Swig favorites. Here are a few:

🥤Cherry Bomb –  Pepsi + Cherry + Coconut + Vanilla Cream

🥤Bloody Wild- Mountain Dew + Mango Puree + Strawberry Puree

🥤Poppin’ Pineapple – Sprite + Pineapple + Watermelon + Strawberry Popping Pearls

🥤Big Al- Diet Coke + Coconut + Fresh Lime

I ordered the Texas Tab, which is Dr. Pepper, vanilla, and coconut cream. Delish! Adding different creams and ingredients to our favorite sodas really enhances the flavor and I can totally see how this could be just as addicting as trying different coffee and espresso drinks.

If you’re worried about the sugar, you can always choose diet and sugar-free options and remember, you can come up with your own connection if none of the standard options work for you.

The Wylie location that I visited was a drive-thru-only shop, but others have indoor seating. If you like a sweet and fizzy drink, give Swig a try.
