Anyone who’s lived in Houston for long enough knows that heat can mostly be uncomfortable, and sometimes even life-threatening, due to the emerging climate crisis increasing temperatures.

That’s why this year, the city of Houston will partner with Reliant Energy’s Beat the Heat program to open up almost 30 cooling centers, Mayor John Whitmire announced June 11.

Not only can residents who visit the centers stay cool in triple digit temperatures, but they can also enjoy snacks, activities, and even a chance to go over their power bill with an energy advisor.

“We know summers in Texas are hot, which is why we’re focused on delivering meaningful support to our customers and neighbors from the Plains to the Valley,” Mark Parsons, Reliant senior vice president, said in a news release. “Whether someone wants to take control of their energy use with the latest smart home tech or needs a little help paying their bill, we’re here to help them stay cool, safe and empowered.”
