Breakfast has evolved from just bacon, eggs, and a cup of drip coffee from a days-old pot. Unique flavors inspired by countries around the globe have become all the rage, with recent studies showing that a majority of breakfast consumers are interested in trying flavor fusions and combinations.

So it’s no surprise that Casaema, a local Houston breakfast spot that just landed itself on the list of Bon Appetit’s 14 Best New Breakfast Restaurants

One of two Texas spots on the list, Casaema focuses on food that highlights ingredients that are native to Mexico. Blending traditional breakfast items with a Mexican twist is the name of the game here, with elote muffins, French toast with strawberry compote and spiced hoja santa custard, and horchata donuts.

Casaema’s menu also includes papaya salad, mushroom tetela, mole verde, mushroom tostada, and suadero chilaquiles.

“Our most popular dish on the menu, our chilaquiles are tossed in a salsa verde accompanied by frijoles, dill sour cream, red onions, brisket and topped with house made queso fresco and a sunny side egg,” the restaurant said on Instagram. “It’s the ultimate comfort breakfast food and everyone’s favorite.”

Along with achieving 2024 James Beard Semi-Finalist Best Pastry Chef/Baker and becoming a 2025 James Beard Finalist for Best New Restaurant, the restaurant has received praise from locals on being affordable and having delicious pastries.
