If you’ve recently seen bright purple pumps at your local gas station, don’t worry—you’re not seeing things.

The new Shell pumps are part of a charity campaign called “The Giving Pump,” running now through the end of October. Customers will have the chance to donate a portion of every gas purchase towards two children’s charities: the Children’s Medical Foundation of Houston and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston.

Gas stations across the US are participating in this fundraiser; there are 269 pumps across the Houston area alone. Pump locations can be found on this locator map

Shell, a Houston-based company, has been putting on this project since 2021.

“The Giving Pump goes to show how small choices — like where you fuel up — can add up to meaningful change,” Barbara Stoyko, senior vice president of Mobility and Convenience Americas at Shell, said in a statement. “It’s really a special time of year for Shell and it makes me so grateful that we can collaborate with them and our customers to create real, local impacts.”

According to data from AAA, gas prices in Texas for the month of September have fluctuated from $2.74 to $2.73, which is about how much gas cost last year, at an average of $2.78. The highest recorded price of gas in Texas was $4.69, in June 2022.
