Libraries offer so much more than just the ability to check out books—here’s everything you can do with a Houston or Harris County library card.
Growing up, going to the library was the activity I most looked forward to, especially in the summer when school was out. Through an elementary schooler’s eyes, being able to take books home for free was nothing short of miraculous.
As an adult, it’s been eye-opening to discover what else you can do with Houston and Harris County Public Library cards. Libraries are one of the few free third spaces that still exist in the US, fostering community and a space to congregate.
Did you know? All Texas residents, including children under 18, can get a free library card at most Texas public libraries! Some libraries even offer online registration as opposed to in-person.
Here are things you can do with a Houston or Harris County library card:
- Access free e-books, e-audiobooks, digital magazines, and films through third-party apps like Hoopla, Kanopy, and Libby.
- Certain branches offer passport applications and renewals. Check here and here for the necessary qualifications.
- Besides books, both libraries offer access to board games, musical instruments, cookware, gardening tools, and even laptops.
- Houston Public Library TECHLink centers give card holders access to 3D printers, music, podcast and video studios, multimedia stations, embroidery machines, VR headsets, and more. An in-person tour and orientation are required before use.
- Interested in growing a green thumb? A select number of Harris County Public Library branches offer seed libraries and gardening resources.
- Flip Kits are available for infants through third grade at Houston Public Libraries. Each kit comes with a book, guided instructions, and activities. As a bonus, once the kit is returned and a short survey is completed, you’ll receive a family pass to the Children’s Museum of Houston.
- Both library systems offer in-person and virtual events covering a range of subjects, including movie nights, book clubs, wellness workshops, and language classes. Browse event calendars here and here.
- Meeting rooms and study spaces are available for free reservations at most branches.
Last year, the Trump Administration targeted federal agencies directly responsible for supporting local libraries and museums, such as the Institute of Museum and Library Services, among others. While the order is currently stalled in a lawsuit that declared the move unconstitutional, some libraries still felt the harm from the initial order.
