Handheld crafts are having a moment—Here’s how to start your pottery, needlepoint, or crochet journey in Houston

If you’re looking to cut back on screen time and give your hands something to do besides scrolling, allow us to introduce you to handheld crafts.

Handheld crafts like needlepoint, crochet, and pottery are having a moment, with the global arts and crafts market valued at $50.66 billion in 2026. In a decade when almost everything feels ephemeral, crafting offers the chance to make something real—something you can hold in your hands and say, “I made that.”

In an era defined by hustle culture, it can also be refreshing to pick up a hobby without feeling the need to monetize it. Simply disconnecting from the stress of a 9-to-5 workday—or the latest news headline—can be a reward of its own.

Research also shows that handheld crafts can reduce stress, boost cognitive function and memory, and improve fine motor skills, while providing therapeutic relaxation. Crafting benefits people of all ages, but studies suggest it may be especially helpful for older adults. In some cases, it can support cognitive function and even slow memory loss associated with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Check out these Houston classes and supply shops to get your craft on.

Needlepoint

Needlepoint is a type of embroidery where diagonal stitches in different colors create a finished piece of art that can then be transformed into pillows, ornaments, and more. As the oldest form of canvas work, needlepoint has deep roots—but its recent surge in popularity has expanded the types of designs available. Today, canvases range from classic florals to pop-culture references like “Real Housewives of New York” scenes and even caviar tins.

Pottery

It’s one of humanity’s oldest forms of art, dating as far back as 20,000 years ago—pottery involves shaping clay into vessels and other objects, such as tableware and ceramics. The process includes several steps—preparing, shaping, drying, firing, glazing, and decorating—but local classes make it approachable for beginners. Handbuilding pottery is also an option, using your hands instead of a pottery wheel.
