The American Black Film Festival is holding a two-day event this weekend at AMC NorthPark 15. Here are all the details.
The American Black Film Festival is hosting a pop up event in Dallas on November 15 and 16 at the AMC NorthPark 15. The festival originally launched in 1997 as a way of “showcasing Black talent and discovering new voices,” and to provide up-and-coming artists with the resources, support, and industry access they need to build successful careers for themselves. Filmmakers Issa Rae, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Coogler have previously been showcased at the festival.
ABFF’s Dallas pop up will include celebrity conversations, film screenings, and a wealth of inspiration for local creatives and film buffs. Speaking about the decision to host events across the US this year, the president and co-founder of Nice Crowd (the event company that has run ABFF for 30 years), Nicole Friday, told The Dallas Morning News, “We wanted to really bring some of the same energy and excitement of the festival to four cities where we could celebrate culture and creativity with regional talent and connect them to national industry opportunities.”
New York and Atlanta were the first two cities on that list. The final pop up event will be held in Los Angeles next month. For Friday, ensuring that the mini-tour stopped in Dallas was essential. “It’s a vibrant creative hub. Dallas folks have been asking for us to bring a little bit of ABFF to the city, and so we’re excited to be in Dallas,” she said.
Schedule of events
The American Black Film Festival pop up will take place November 15-16 at the AMC NorthPark 15 located at 8687 N Central Expy #3000 in Dallas. The festival will begin at 11 a.m. each day. A full list of scheduled events can be found here, but we’re going to hit a few of the highlights for you.
Saturday kicks off at 11 a.m. with a masterclass, “Break It Down: How to Bring Any Script to Life,” presented by the New York Film Academy. Actor Gerrard James will lead the session. Later in the day on Saturday, WNBA stars Theresa “TP” Plaisance and Syd Colson will discuss “Creative Storytelling and the Business of Sports and Content,” which you can grab tickets for here. Rounding out the day is the HBO Short Film Showcase and a discussion panel with filmmakers Sam Henderson and Luke Harris.
Sunday’s events feature independent film and shorts screenings, including “The Fisherman,” “Fatherless No More,” and “The Late Night Creep.” Speaking about the variety of events taking place over the weekend, Nicole Friday told the Dallas Morning News, “If you are a writer, actor, there’s a masterclass. If you’re a film connoisseur and you love independent films, there’s something for you.” She added, “If you want to know about sports and the business of sports, I think there’s something for that audience as well.”
