Baker’s Main Street Furniture has been a staple in the Garland community for over 100 years. It’s one of the city’s oldest businesses and has been operated by the same family for three generations.
August Marvin “A.M.” Baker first established the business as a general and hardware store in Wylie in 1923 before relocating to its current home on 524 Main Street. After making the move, Baker expanded into a furniture enterprise instead.
According to the company’s website, “As the business grew, so did its home. The Baker family renovated the store into the distinctive three-story showroom that has become a landmark in historic downtown Garland while building a reputation for quality home furnishings and exceptional customer service.”
A.M.’s son, F.K., took over the family business in 1946 after fighting in World War II with the US Navy. F.K.’s son, James, took over operations in 1980 and remained in that role for 29 years before his brothers, John and David, took over in 2009. Now, David has made the heartbreaking decision to close the family business for good.
In a statement announcing the closure, David wrote, “It has been nothing short of a privilege and honor for the Baker family to be part of this community for more than 100 years and serve generations of families. Thank you for the trust and loyalty that’s enabled our family and business to thrive.”
The Baker family did not explain what ultimately led them to make this difficult call, but did note that a liquidation sale is being held to offload its remaining inventory.
The 16,000-square-foot building itself is also up for sale. Baker’s Main Street Furniture holds liquidation sale before closure
The press release announcing the closure of Baker’s Main Street Furniture didn’t specify how long it would be before it closes its doors for good. If you’d like to stop by to check out the 40-70% sales being offered on furniture, accessories, and mattresses, the hours of operation are as follows:
- Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Closed on Sundays
Categories of what’s available on Baker’s website include living room, dining room, bedroom, home office, and home accent. Everything from sofas to bookcases to headboards to barstools to clocks are being sold at discounted rates.
And while it’s exciting to purchase high-quality items at a fraction of the cost, it’s a difficult moment in Garland history to say goodbye to a business that has served its community for 103 years.
