For over 50 years, H&H Bagels has been serving communities throughout New York and across the country. The popular bagel shop was opened in 1972 by Hector Hernandez and his brother-in-law Helmer Toro and has steadily become a notable community staple.
It’s been highlighted in various television shows and movies, including “You’ve Got Mail,” “Sex and the City,” and a popular episode of “Seinfeld” titled “The Strike,” where the fictional holiday “Festivus” was first introduced.
Now, Houston residents can enjoy these iconic bagels without having to travel all the way to New York City. H&H Bagels is officially opening its location at 2850 Westheimer on September 10.
A celebration is planned for the shop’s 6 a.m. opening time where the first 250 customers of the day who purchase something will receive a gift card of up to $100 and a tote bag. Jay Rushin, H&H Bagel’s CEO, said the company is looking forward to the new expansion.
In a statement, Rushin said, “We’re incredibly excited to bring H&H Bagels to Texas. The responses to our recent openings around the country have been amazing, and we can’t wait to share an authentic taste of New York with the Houston community.”
Back in 2025, the company announced it was going to open around 70 stores throughout the US, including its first Texas location in Houston.
At the time, Rushin spoke with the On Hand newsletter about the decision to expand, saying, “We’re staying relevant by going national. We don’t think we need to stay in New York to be relevant. We’ve got five operating locations in New York, which is plenty. But pretty much 100 percent of our focus is growing nationally.”
It’s unclear as to why exactly H&H Bagels set its sights on Houston, but we’re never going to complain about a good bagel and cream cheese or something that’ll help boost the local economy.
What’s on the menu at H&H Bagels?
One of the things that makes H&H Bagels unique is that the bagels are produced at a massive facility in Queens, New York, so you’re getting the real authentic experience no matter where you’re biting into them.
The bagels are boiled then quickly frozen and shipped out to different locations, including the one in Houston, where they’re then baked and sold. The shop at 2850 Westheimer will be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
On the menu will be an assortment of bagel and cream cheese flavors, as well as breakfast sandwiches and beverages. A few bagel flavors include everything, jalapeno cheddar, poppy, blueberry, whole wheat everything, plain, and onion.
For sandwiches, classics like bacon, egg, and cheese and sausage, egg, and cheese are on offer, as are nova sandwiches with cream cheese, capers, onion, and tomato.
For cream cheese, flavors include plain, strawberry, spicy scallion, and scallion, among others. Regular hot and iced coffee are served at H&H Bagels, as is iced tea, soda, and assorted juices.
There are also bakery items like babka and brownies, making it a one-stop destination for all your breakfast, lunch, and snack needs.
