The George W. Bush Presidential Museum, located at 2943 SMU Boulevard in Dallas, recently announced an exciting temporary exhibit about the Founding Fathers who shaped our nation.
These men included George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, and John Hancock, among several others.
Titled “Up Close with History: Founding Fathers Edition,” the new exhibit runs from September 23-27 and features rare documents that aren’t often on display to the public. These artifacts include:
- A letter addressing a personal matter between Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette
- A letter handwritten by George Washington during the Revolutionary War, sent to Col. John Cadwalader
- A letter handwritten by Alexander Hamilton during the Whiskey Rebellion, sent to Samuel Hodgdon
- A portrait of George Washington painted in 1785 by Robert Edge Pine
- A letter handwritten by James Madison to United States agents requesting protection and relief for American seamen
- A portrait of Dolley Madison (wife of James Madison) painted in the early 19th Century by William Dunlap
They’re of particular note because they feature the signatures of these groundbreaking men, and because they have been carefully preserved throughout the course of America’s history. Each of these items is on loan from the Harlan Crow Library.
Located within the Bullock Museum (1800 N. Congress Ave. in Austin), the Harlan Crow Library specializes in obtaining and preserving collector’s items of historical significance, such as rare manuscripts and paintings.

Here’s how to grab your tickets to Founding Fathers exhibit
The George W. Bush Presidential Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. To visit the “Up Close with History: Founding Fathers Edition” exhibit between September 23-27, a regular admission ticket must be purchased here. To start, select which date you plan to visit the museum and click on the corresponding square on the calendar populated when you follow that link.
Next, hit “continue,” then follow the prompts until you come to a page listing the amount of tickets you want to purchase. Admission costs $23 per senior (62 and above), $26 per adult (18-61), $24 per youth (13-17), and $20 per child (5-12). Children under the age of five are admitted for free, and retired military veterans are admitted for $10 each.
Active duty military personnel, as well as K-12 teachers and SMU students, staff, and faculty, all receive free admission to the Bush Presidential Museum. For assistance securing those free tickets, please call 214-200-4306 or email guestservices@bushcenter.org prior to your visit.
