The holidays are almost here, and if you’re a parent, you know what that means: keeping the kids entertained while trying not to drain your bank account.
As a mom of three, I know how quickly a simple family outing can turn expensive. Between admission tickets, snacks, and the inevitable “Mom, can I get that?” from the gift shop, even an afternoon out can put a dent in the family budget.
But here’s some good news! You don’t have to spend a fortune to have fun with your kids in the Rio Grande Valley.
From butterfly encounters and hands-on crafts to outdoor festivals and a free holiday meal, there are plenty of ways to enjoy November without breaking the bank.
Here are five worth adding to your calendar.
1. Texas Butterfly Festival Community Day

Location: National Butterfly Center, 3333 Butterfly Park Drive, Mission
When: Saturday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m.– 2 p.m.
Cost: Free
If your kids love butterflies, bugs, and exploring the outdoors, this one is worth the trip.
The National Butterfly Center is opening its doors for a free Community Day during the Texas Butterfly Festival, just in time for peak butterfly season in South Texas. Families can participate in the monarch migration game, get an up-close look at reptiles, make seed bombs, explore nature trails, and enjoy arts and crafts. There’s even a hungry caterpillar playscape for little explorers who would rather climb than sit still.
And the best part? You get a chance to experience one of the Valley’s most unique natural attractions without paying admission.
2. McAllen Arbor Day Celebration

Location: McAllen Municipal Park, 1921 N. Bicentennial Blvd., McAllen
When: Saturday, Nov. 7, 8 a.m.– 12 p.m.
Cost: Free
What if your kids could spend the morning running, playing, learning about nature, and even bring home a tree? That’s exactly what’s happening at McAllen’s annual Arbor Day Celebration.
The family-friendly festival includes educational activities, music, local vendors, a “trashion show” featuring recycled fashion, and a free kids fun run for children 12 and younger.
Kids participating in the roughly one-mile fun run can receive a finisher medal, and shirts are available for the first 300 participants who check in. Families can also bring a recyclable plastic bottle or aluminum can to trade for a native tree or shrub. That’s not a bad deal for a Saturday morning!
3. H-E-B Feast of Sharing

Locations: McAllen, Brownsville, Weslaco, Harlingen, Port Isabel, and Raymondville
When: Various dates throughout November
Cost: Free
Here’s one November tradition that doesn’t involve cooking, cleaning, or worrying about the grocery bill.
H-E-B’s annual Feast of Sharing celebrations are returning to the Rio Grande Valley, bringing communities together for free holiday meals, music, and festivities.
The gatherings are open to the public, making them an opportunity for families to share a meal and celebrate the season with neighbors.
And with events happening in several Valley cities, there’s a good chance one is coming to your community.
Rio Grande Valley dates:
- McAllen: Sunday, Nov. 8
- Brownsville: Wednesday, Nov. 11
- Weslaco: Friday, Nov. 13
- Harlingen: Tuesday, Nov. 17
- Port Isabel: Wednesday, Nov. 18
- Raymondville: Thursday, Nov. 19

4. Free kids’ crafts at Lakeshore Learning
Location: Lakeshore Learning Store, 1316 E. Expressway 83, McAllen
When: Saturdays, Nov. 7 and 21, 11 a.m. –3 p.m.
Cost: Free
Sometimes the best activities are the ones where someone else supplies the materials — and you don’t have to clean glitter off your kitchen table afterward.
Lakeshore Learning is hosting two free imagination builders events this November, giving kids ages 3 and older a chance to create a craft of their own.
Children can explore hands-on learning activities and make take-home crafts, with a mosaic-themed project planned for Nov. 7 and another creative building activity on Nov. 21.
The events are walk-in, require no reservations, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
It’s an easy indoor option for families looking to squeeze in a little creativity without spending money on another craft kit.
5. Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival

Location: Harlingen Convention Center, 701 Harlingen Heights Drive, Harlingen
When: Nov. 11–15
Cost: Free family activities and trade show; some festival events cost extra
You don’t have to be an expert birdwatcher to enjoy one of South Texas’ biggest nature celebrations.
The Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival returns to Harlingen with activities for bird enthusiasts of all ages — including children who may have never picked up a pair of binoculars. Families can enjoy free educational activities, guided walks, and live raptor demonstrations, where kids can learn about birds of prey. There’s also a free trade show to explore.
While some festival field trips and special sessions require paid registration, families can still experience plenty without purchasing tickets.
And who knows? You might just inspire your next little nature enthusiast.
A bonus for those outside the Valley: A trip to Gladys Porter Zoo for less

Location: Gladys Porter Zoo, 500 E. Ringgold St., Brownsville
When: Nov. 6–8 for out-of-Valley visitors & Nov. 7–11 for eligible military families
Cost: $6 adults and $4 children for qualifying visitors
Okay, this one isn’t free, but if your family qualifies for the special admission prices, it’s worth knowing about.
Gladys Porter Zoo is offering discounted admission to visitors who live outside the Rio Grande Valley from Nov. 6–8. Current and former military members and their families can also receive special admission rates during the zoo’s military appreciation days, Nov. 7–11, with qualifying identification.
That means eligible families can see everything from giraffes and flamingos to some of the zoo’s newest animal babies at a lower price than usual. Just remember that the promotion isn’t available to local RGV residents, and the military discount requires qualifying identification.
The truth is, making memories with your kids doesn’t have to involve amusement parks, expensive tickets, or elaborate weekend plans. So pack a few snacks, grab the kids, and enjoy a little family time this November. Your wallet will thank you.
