Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia presses Texas General Land Office on disaster-aid fairness

At a recent House Financial Services Committee hearing, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia (D-TX-29) called out the Texas General Land Office over how it’s handling disaster‑aid dollars.

The agency says it’s managing more than $14.3 billion across eight disasters it describes as historic. But last year, Garcia pointed to HUD’s findings that the Texas General Land Office discriminated against communities of color in Houston and Harris County when distributing Harvey relief. Her latest push puts fresh attention on whether families hit hardest by Harvey are finally getting the help they were promised.
