I’ve been working on a secret project, and it’s time I told you about it. In July, I’ll be launching a new, free newsletter: Farm to Market Texas

FM Texas is a statewide newsletter, focused on connecting Texans across our vastly different regions. (Click here to be one of the first subscribers!) Expect culture stories, history and nostalgia, politics pieces, and news that affects more than just the region it’s coming from.

I know in North Texas we often just focus on what’s in front of us, but our bond as Texans asks us to look beyond our personal experiences to learn what folks in Midland, Marfa, and McAllen cherish and need, too. Just as our massive FM roadway system connects the unlikely, I hope this newsletter connects the unlikely.

Fort Worth African American Museum to open June 12 as part of Freedom Vibes festival

In January, we discussed how the Fort Worth City Council approved funding for the Fort Worth African American Museum and Cultural Center—now, that museum is set to open on June 12. KERA News announced yesterday that the first exhibition will be titled “All ‘N All: Artists Embracing Community.” The collection is the result of a collaboration between the National Juneteenth Museum and Kinfolk House.

John Barnett serves as the board chairman of the Fort Worth African American Museum and Cultural Center, and he said everyone is excited about its “first foray into the community.” Barnett also told KERA that he and his colleagues considered it a privilege to work with Kinfolk House and the National Juneteenth Museum to put together such a meaningful exhibit.

Sedrick Huckaby, Kinfolk House’s founder, said his organization was as invested as Barnett’s in creating a harmonious partnership through this project. “Perhaps more than any other time in the city’s history we see institutions with Black leadership partnering with practitioners of Black descent,” Huckaby told KERA via email. “This is not a conspiracy. It is simply the evolution of the diversity of our city.”

🌐 A second reunion: A mini Reunion Tower is coming to Plano. On Tuesday, the Plano City Council approved a zoning change that allows AT&T to build a 280-foot tower as part of the move of its headquarters from downtown Dallas to Plano. See a rendering here. (Fox 4)

⚽ Sundance has balls: Thirty-one large soccer balls appeared at Sundance Square in Fort Worth this week. They’re works of art commissioned from different North Texas artists to celebrate the upcoming World Cup. (Fort Worth Report)

💜 Homes for vets: A transitional housing community for homeless vets is in the works in South Dallas. The 50 homes planned will range from 260-square-foot single occupancy spaces to 360-square-foot family units. Get all the details here. (KERA)
