Even though school is back in session on Aug. 10, that doesn’t mean summer fun has to end. I’ve been making weekend trips to Galveston lately, trying to soak up the heat that I know I’ll be missing soon enough. The island puts on family-friendly beachfront events all summer, with live music, art, and markets. 

Texas beaches are a great place to get curious about coastal wildlife. I was surprised to learn that Galveston is home to a ghost wolf population—the last red wolves of Texas. The island celebrates this biodiversity by hosting scientists for public workshops on the ocean’s creatures.

Being on the Gulf Coast gives us plenty of beaches to choose from, so make the drive to a sandy shore before we shift into fall, and remember: adults can build sandcastles, too.

On Tuesday, July 28, members of the Democratic Women’s Caucus stood with Rep. Joaquin Castro, calling for unity and an end to family detention during a press event urging the release of women, children, and families held at the Dilley ICE facility.

Members of Congress representing Texas and other states called on an end to family detention this week after visiting the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Dilley, Texas. 

They traveled to the facility as part of an oversight trip led by US Rep. Joaquin Castro (D‑Texas). On Tuesday, Castro joined Democratic Women’s Caucus members: US Reps. Yassamin Ansari (D‑AZ), Lizzie Fletcher (D‑Texas), Luz Rivas (D‑Calif.) and Ayanna Pressley (D‑Mass.) at a press conference with FWD.us and the Families Belong Together campaign, urging the US Department of Homeland Security to release the women, children, and families held at the facility.
