Canada’s popular coffee and donut chain Tim Hortons is officially coming to San Antonio. Here’s what you need to know.
San Antonio just gained a reason to learn the lyrics to the Canadian National Anthem: Iconic breakfast chain Tim Hortons is officially eyeing its first Alamo City location. A projected timeline for construction and completion of the project has not been confirmed as of writing—My San Antonio estimates it’ll likely start some time in April and be done just before July, but TBD on whether that holds—but excitement is mounting all the same. The company filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration (TDLR) on February 20, indicating that it was set to begin building its new location at 2919 N. Loop 1604 E. in San Antonio in the near future.
The Far Northside spot will reportedly be around 1,566 square-feet and will cost $350,000 to construct. It’s an ideal area to position the Canadian coffee and donut chain, as it’ll be nestled in the Redland Plaza shopping center. Texas’s own Shipley Do-Nuts already has a location there, as does Brevity Coffee, which may cause some healthy competition between the respective caffeine hubs. All potential rivalries aside, Tim Hortons has been increasing its Texas presence since 2022, and announced its plans in 2023 to expand even further. The new San Antonio store may be the first of many to take shape in the Lone Star State over the next few years.
Tim Hortons has grown in popularity outside of Canada over the last few years
In 2022, Tim Hortons’s first Texas location opened in Katy. Since then, the chain has expanded into Austin, Stafford, Cedar Park, Bryan, Houston (including the suburb of Humble), and Richmond. My San Antonio notes that North Texas was set to welcome the Canadian coffee shop to Coppell and Denton, but those locations have yet to manifest.
The ones that have been constructed are a hit with Texans, and the US President of Tim Hortons, Katerina Glyptis, is hoping the San Antonio store will be met with the same positive reception. “Tim’s is very much meant to be there for everyone. Our founder made us a place where anybody could go to feel at home. We try to live up to that by really providing people with whatever the offering is that they want,” she said.
The chain serves a variety of food and beverage options
Tim Hortons is primarily celebrated for its coffee and traditional donuts, but additional menu items include bagels, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and wraps, and Timbits (basically its version of a Munchkin/donut hole). Drinks include those made with espresso, like its popular Iced Capp®, as well as fruit refreshers, matcha, chai, protein lattes, iced tea, and lemonade, as well as an array of bottled beverages.
