Along the Texas Gulf Coast, an Indigenous tribe is righting a centuries-old wrong about their clans. A historical marker describing the Karankawa people as “primitive,” “savage,” and “cannibal” once stood as definitive history in Corpus Christi. This summer, it was corrected. We talked to an Indigenous resistance educator, language keeper, and artist of the Karankawa’s Hawk Clan about what the correction and rededication ceremony meant to the tribe.
