Texas parent and co-founder of the Texas Freedom to Read Project Laney Hawes stressed the importance of librarians and the “unworkable mess” caused by Senate Bill 13, which has led to more book bans in Texas public schools, during a Senate Committee on Education meeting on Wednesday. Hawes’ comments come at the same time new data released by PEN America shows that Texas banned over 8,000 books last school year, more than any other state in the nation.
