‘Tis the season for camping trips, and the Airbnb of camping, Hip Camp, has released its list of the 50 best campsites in the US. Texas’ only mention had an interesting feature—llamas. 

Llama Land Ranch is a 101-acre property that sits about an hour southeast of Dallas, right on the Cedar Creek Reserve. It’s your typically picturesque campground besides the 50 or so llamas roaming around, purely there to contribute to the vibe. You can opt to camp among them, or set up in an area that merely overlooks their pasture. Customers report friendly, silly encounters, and I was comforted to know that llamas don’t have top teeth, so no biting is possible.

Maybe I’ll test it out for all of us when it’s not 100 degrees outside. Y’all know I’m a whimp. 😅

Standing in the Oval Office on June 26, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) delivered what amounted to a declaration. As chair of President Donald Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission, Patrick told the president—and the country—the phrase “separation of church and state” has no constitutional basis.

“The overwhelming majority of our witnesses said that they were attacked and punished, and what was used against them was one phrase that’s not in the Constitution. And that phrase is separation of church and state,” he said.

Weeks earlier, at the Texas Republican Party Convention in Houston, Patrick had embraced a label that once carried political risk: Christian nationalist. “To me, that means I love God and I love America,” he told the crowd to roaring applause. “If that’s what a Christian nationalist is, here I am.”

State Rep. Vikki Goodwin, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor who will face Patrick in November, said his Oval Office remarks were not just constitutionally misleading—they were a preview of where Texas is heading.

A few months back I saw a good-looking plate of food on Instagram while waiting in a long line at a CVS drive-thru. Within the hour I was walking up to a pink house sitting on a back street to pick up my order. I’ve been back three more times, so it’s safe to say I’m a Shambria’s Eats fan.

This Instagram eatery started when a Dallas woman embraced the love of cooking her grandmother instilled in her and took a chance by selling it to strangers. Shambria started selling from Desoto, but last summer she found a Barbie dream house in the Bishop Arts area of Dallas and has been selling from the window of it ever since. 

Baked spaghetti, pot roast, jerk lamb chops, fried wings, meatloaf, turkey legs, stuffed salmon, and fried catfish dipped in a honey glaze—these have all made an appearance on Shambria’s menu, which updates at the start of each week. Sides include collard greens, mac & cheese, and smothered cabbage. And it’s all delicious. My favorite meals have been the pot roast packaged in the rim of a loaf of sweet cornbread and the sticky fried fish.

Starting tomorrow, you won’t have to drive up to the pink house if you don’t want to—you’ll be able to pick up your order from a Bishop Arts ghost kitchen. You’ll also be able to order through Uber Eats and DoorDash to save yourself the drive. If you end up trying this growing soul food business, let me know and bring me a plate while you’re at it.
