American Airlines will launch electronic boarding gates at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport this summer. Here’s what to know.
As someone who travels fairly frequently, the one big pet peeve I have with being at the airport is how some people handle the boarding process. I’m an anxious flyer, so I have complete understanding and empathy for those who want to board the plane, buckle into their seats, and get ready for takeoff. However, standing in or near the line before your boarding group is called makes everything more complicated and stressful for everyone involved. I wish people realized that we’re all going to the same place and they’re not going to take off without us—it’s totally fine to wait an extra five minutes instead of clogging up the boarding area before you’re supposed to be in line.
Apparently, American Airlines agrees because the company recently announced that it will be launching electronic boarding gates this summer at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. A pilot program (not that kind of pilot, but this kind of pilot) was held in November 2025 to test the electronic gates for ease of use. Jim Moses works for American Airlines as its senior vice president of DFW Hub Operations, and he said in a statement, “After piloting the technology late last year and seeing positive feedback from both customers and team members, we’re excited to further incorporate electronic boarding gates at DFW.”
Heather Garboden, the Chief Customer Officer for the airline company, expanded on this thought by saying,“Boarding plays a key role in how customers experience the final moments before their flight, and electronic boarding gates will further elevate that experience, creating a more seamless and consistent process.” She added, “This innovative change is part of a broader shift toward creating a more intuitive travel journey, one that blends technology and service to guide customers through each step with greater ease and confidence, delivering a modern, consistent experience wherever they travel with us.”
Where will the electronic gates be located?
If you’re also interested in experiencing more ease and efficiency at the airport, you’ll be thrilled to hear that American Airlines will be installing 20 electronic board gates in Terminals A and C at Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport this summer. Essentially, the gates are touchscreen and provide clear instructions on how to scan your boarding pass for automatic validation before you’re cleared to head toward the plane. The gates are also equipped with pacing regulation to prevent congestion in the boarding area and ensure that traffic flows freely from your gate through the jet bridge. Another big win for those of us in the Anxious Flyer’s Club.
American Airlines also emphasized that this will make things easier on employees, too. By automating the boarding process, American team members will be freed up to provide customer service assistance and complete their pre-flight tasks with fewer interruptions. Now, this might not necessarily prevent everyone from heading to the boarding area before their group is called, but it seems like it’ll at least move them through more quickly, which is half the battle sometimes.
