Want to escape the city life, or just looking to explore somewhere new in Texas? A hidden region in the southern tip of the state, The Rio Grande Valley, is the intersection where Hispanic and American culture and history meet.

And, if you need an itinerary of where to go and what to visit, we’ve got you covered.

South Padre Island

When in the lower Rio Grande Valley, it’s essential to visit this beautiful beach that borders the Gulf of Mexico. This Spring break attraction is a must-visit, as its sandy beaches and exciting activities, like dolphin watching, visiting turtle centers, and eating fresh seafood at restaurants like Blackbeards, Bar Louie, and Joe’s Oyster Bar, are some you can’t miss.

McAllen, TX

This hub of culinary food and cultural activities is definitely worth stopping by, especially when you consider the authentic hispanic restaurants you can check out, such as El Vagoncito Chilango, La Casa de La Abuela, Don Pepe’s, and more.

After stopping by one of many restaurants that McAllen has to offer, popular attractions such as the IMAS museum, La Plaza Mall, Quinta Mazatlan, and the Mercado District are essentials. There is so much rich history in McAllen that can be conveyed through its art, language, and food. The Museum of South Texas History and the Gelman Stained Glass Museum in nearby San Juan, TX are out of this world.

Brownsville, TX

Home to the famous Gladys Porter Zoo, Brownsville offers a plethora of things to see and do during your visit. Apart from the zoo, destinations such as the Historic Brownsville Museum and the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park are must-see attractions for history buffs. For a quick bite to eat, places like Jolie Petite, La Bandera BTX, Big Daddy’s Restaurant, and Lola’s Bistro are perfect.

Alamo, TX

Featured in The New York Times, Alamo, TX is most well known for its flea market which transforms on the weekend into a dance floor where people of all ages gather around to dance as freely as possible. This market slash one-of-a-kind dance hall has brought international attention to it. Plus, the various vendors sell everything from fruit, to candy, to clothing apparel, to classic Mexican snacks that will get you hooked instantly.

After visiting the Alamo flea market, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful place to spend some time, with a trail that’s perfect for exploring as it’s home to several different species of birds waiting for you to discover them throughout your stroll.

Monte Alto, TX

In this small town in the lower Rio Grande Valley resides Alpaquita Ranch, which is the No. 1 most visited alpaca farm in TX. It’s a sanctuary for Huacaya and Suri alpacas ready to be welcomed with love from visitors. You can book a tour online or stay the night at one of the cabins with the alpacas. This special experience is one you will never forget and you can’t replicate it anywhere else.

If you find yourself needing an escape from the bright traffic lights and urban feeling, the Rio Grande Valley is a great place to visit and feel at home, with many unique offerings that you’ll want to see for yourself at least once in your lifetime.
