Dallas is no joke when it comes to food. The scene here may seem secondary to NYC and LA, but recently our bagels swept a NYC bagel contest and other eateries are shining brightly on the national stage, winning Michelin awards and securing James Beard nominations.

What’s the best food in Dallas overall? That’s a tough question. From authentic Mexican cuisine to Southern comfort food and classic American steakhouses, the city’s food scene welcomes a variety of establishments that have won the hearts of locals and traveling foodies.

Recently, we asked our readers to rank the best restaurants in Dallas. Each eatery brings something unique to the table, ensuring an unforgettable dining experience for anyone looking to explore the 214.

3. Javier’s Restaurant

We’re not at all surprised that Javier’s Restaurant was chosen by our readers as one of the best restaurants in the city. This locally-owned restaurant and cigar bar offers a glimpse inside Mexico City’s elite dining scene without leaving Dallas. This Zagat-rated favorite scored an unbelievable 25 points for service, as well as receiving high ratings for their food and atmosphere.

Speaking of atmosphere, the restaurant’s sophisticated decor, marked by rich wood furnishings and dim lighting, creates a warm and inviting space that is perfect for intimate dinners or celebrations with friends. And their outdoor patio is lined with brick and beautiful sprawling vines. It’s a beautiful escape from everyday life. Each detail is specifically curated to reflect life in Mexico City, particularly inside Javier’s premiere cigar bar.

At Javier’s, the menu celebrates Mexican culture, thoughtfully preparing classic dishes while utilizing higher-quality ingredients. Signature offerings include the Filete Cantinflas, a filet mignon stuffed with Chihuahua cheese and topped with a savory sauce, and the Pollo con Mole Poblano, a feast that features tender chicken served with a rich, dark mole sauce. Seafood lovers can dive into the fresh Red Snapper, prepared with perfectly seasoned tomatoes and bell peppers. While each dish is elevated beyond what you may find at a mom-and-pop cantina, the menu is still wonderfully approachable.

Javier’s also stocks an impressive selection of tequilas and mezcals, not to mention their expansive wine list. The restaurant’s margaritas, made with freshly squeezed lime juice and premium spirits, are a crowd favorite and pair perfectly with any of the dishes on the menu.

2. Roots Southern Table

Roots Southern Table offers Dallas eaters a one-of-a-kind experience: a trip back in culinary time, celebrating the roots of Chef Tiffany Derry through dishes she learned from her grandmother. Food was a love language at her family’s table, and she mastered their techniques, perfecting Southern favorites (made with love) to share with y’all.

The menu at Roots Southern Table is built on comfort food. But these dishes come with a side of modern innovation. The most talked about dish is the Duck Fat Fried Chicken, which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and served family style. Modern offerings like the Fuyu Persimmon Carpaccio add a burst of fresh flavor to the experience.

Roots Southern Table also places a strong emphasis on dietary accommodations. It’s their belief that every member of the family — whether they struggle with celiac disease, allergies, or lactose intolerance, or whether they prefer a meatless lifestyle — should feel welcome at the table.

The bar at Roots Southern Table is another thing that sets them apart. Roots cocktail experts offer a range of whiskey cocktails, signature selections, and local craft beers that complement the menu.

Roots Southern Table’s reputation for excellent food and service has made it a beloved destination in Dallas, and it’s been named both a top 40 in the US restaurant by The New York Times and a go-to destination by Esquire Magazine

1. Brass Ram Steakhouse

Brass Ram Steakhouse has won the hearts of our readers with its huge portions of USDA Prime beef and an experience like no other. This isn’t the kind of steakhouse you walk into for a sneaker-clad dinner with the kids. Brass Ram offers an escape from everyday life with a back-in-time elegant atmosphere and an approachable yet elevated menu.

The menu at Brass Ram is a short but sweet list of USDA Prime cuts of meat and expertly prepared seafood plates, family-style sides, and appetizers. But the menu doesn’t need to be long and complicated since the star of the show is steak. The meat list includes a 24 oz. bone-in ribeye (Cote De Boeuf), “A Burger Like I Had in Paris That One Time a While Ago,” and, of course, the signature Prime Rib cut as many “fingers” thick as you’d like.

In addition to its amazing meats, Brass Ram boasts an impressive wine list and a selection of classic cocktails, including one of the best martinis in Texas. The wine list features a curated collection of reds and whites from around the world that pair beautifully with the menu, while the cocktail menu includes classics like a High Ball and unique mixes like the Left Foot Special.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a date night with your favorite person, Brass Ram Steakhouse provides a welcoming yet elegant space that serves exceptional cuisine. It’s a must-visit destination in Dallas.
