On Monday, the Secretary of the US Department of Transportation, Sean Duffy, announced that DFW Airport will be receiving an $8 million federal grant to help improve bathroom accessibility. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded the funds, which will be used to modernize 37 bathrooms across five airport terminals. The goal is to make each of them more accessible for wheelchair users and for families traveling with strollers.
Secretary Duffy wrote in the press release, “We’re making airports inviting spaces for parents and children to relax and recharge prior to boarding.” Along with making improvements to the airport’s restrooms, the goal is to create additional family-friendly spaces over time, such as additional nursing pods and mothers’ rooms. Play areas, family screening lanes, and sensory rooms for those with special needs are all ideas Secretary Duff is seeking to deliver in the future.
The DFW Airport improvements fall under the umbrella of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act – Airport Terminal Project. That undertaking seeks to invest around $970 million across 133 airports in 45 states to make traveling as easy and convenient as possible. Bryan Bedford, FAA’s Administrator, said, “The FAA is moving quickly to get these investments out the door and into airports nationwide.” Bedford added, “These projects will help create a more welcoming and accessible travel experience for families while demonstrating our commitment to improving America’s airports at record speed.”
Currently, DFW Airport has nursing rooms located near the following gates:
- A18
- B40
- C13/14
- C36
- D2
- D36
- E14
- E26
Where to find accessible bathrooms at DFW Airport
It’s unclear when work will start on DFW Airport’s 37 bathrooms to make them more accessible for wheelchair users or what exactly will be changed for added accessibility. We will provide an update once that information becomes available. In the meantime, the airport’s website notes that all bathrooms located in every terminal are fully accessible as of writing.
Accessible family rooms are located near the women’s and men’s restrooms in each terminal. If you’d like to have an idea of where to find the bathroom you need when traveling, please click here to scroll through DFW Airport’s interactive terminal map. A list will populate on the left side of the page showing where each accessible bathroom is—information includes the terminal, level, and gate it’s found in.
Other details, like whether the restroom is found inside or outside of security, is also provided on that page. For those traveling with service animals, several pet relief areas are located at DFW Airport. This link has more information on that, but here are the areas located outside of security:
- Terminal A – A8
- Terminal C – A temporary pet relief area is located in the parking garage near C17
- Terminal D – D15, D29
- Terminal E – E2, E38
Pet relief areas located inside security are as follows:
- Terminal A – A29
- Terminal B – B28
- Terminal D – D18
- Terminal E – E31
