In the midst of the added busyness from the World Cup, Houston is undergoing some needed, albeit inconvenient, maintenance on one of its most popular trails, the White Oak Bayou Greenway. The entirety of the hiking/biking path stretches over 18 miles and provides direct access to Hogg Park, White Oak Park, Watonga Parkway Park, and several others, along with Downtown Houston.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the stretch of the Greenway closest to N. Shepherd would be closed to both foot and cycling traffic for at least 90 days. It’s part of a larger project designed to improve the Harris County Flood Control District, which will take a total of one year to complete and around $3.7 million. Thankfully, the trail should be accessible again in a matter of months, but for the time being it’ll be closed from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.
The work being done along the Greenway and throughout the Flood District involves removing the concrete lining currently in place and replacing it with steel panels to help the bayou channel function properly. When addressing the closure on Instagram, the Houston Parks Board wrote, “Flood control work is critical infrastructure work, and repairs should absolutely move forward. Closures on one of Houston’s most heavily used trails should also come with clear public notice, a posted detour, and coordination with the jurisdictions and community groups that help steward these spaces.”
A post from June 22 indicates that the Greenway could potentially be closed for up to six months. After the stretch closest to Shepherd is completed, the portion along Durham Drive will be similarly shut down for several weeks to undergo renovations. The entirety of the 18-mile trail revamp is projected to be done by July 2027.
Nicole Nielsen from KRPC 2 was given an alternate route to provide travelers who rely on the Greenway to get back and forth every day. She posted on Instagram that people who are traveling southbound toward Downtown Houston should take a left at TC Jester Street or 11th Street and proceed from there to the Heights MKT Hike and Bike Path for around 1.5 miles before returning onto the White Oak Bayou Greenway.
For those traveling northbound, take a right on TC Jester Street or 11th Street and ride the southwest portion of the MKT trail for about 1.5 miles before rejoining the Greenway by using the Moi Street Bridge.
The White Oak Bayou Greenway is one of Houston’s busiest trails
According to Chron, Houston’s White Oak Bayou Trail is one of the most consistently used in the city. About 1.5 million people traverse it each year, per the Houston Parks Board, as it connects Downtown with the Heights. The closure of the area near N. Shepherd comes several months after the January 15 announcement that the Little White Oak Bayou Trail between the Castillo Community Center and Houston Avenue would be closed through 2028.
That trail is closed due to work on the IH-45 northbound to the I-10 eastbound connector ramps and the I-10 westbound and IH-45 southbound connector ramps. The initial announcement indicated that the Little White Oak Bayou Trail would be reopened intermittently between January 2026 and when the project is completed in 2028. A detour was put in place—a visual of that can be found here, or you can follow detour signs once you arrive in the area.
Please note that it’s important to refrain from entering areas sectioned off with orange construction fencing to avoid accidents and injuries along all stretches of the Greenway currently undergoing renovation.
