South Padre Island is one of the premier destinations in the Rio Grande Valley. It’s perhaps the most common Spring Break spot for Texans, though it’s an incredible place year-round. As the summer heat rolls in, there are few better places to take a vacation.
From indulging in beach life to learning about sea turtles to unique methods of transportation, here’s everything to know about a summer trip to South Padre Island.
7 must-do summer activities in South Padre Island
No two visits to South Padre are quite the same. Sometimes, a morning trip to the beach knocks you out more than you expected, and an afternoon nap replaces a secondary activity you had planned. That’s totally fine! Still, do your best to attempt at least a few of these adventures.
Try a beach activity
Planning a visit to South Padre and then not digging your toes into the sand would be like getting a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the peanut butter and jelly. It just wouldn’t feel complete, and you’d leave you disappointed.
While catching a few rays or curling up with a good book is a wonderful beach activity, feel free to branch out. Among the highlights you can experience: horseback riding, jet skiing, parasailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and surfing, both the regular and kite and wind varieties.
Take sandcastle building lessons
When I was a kid, building sandcastles on the beach was a pathetic effort, at best. I took a bucket, filled it with mildly wet sand, and turned it over. After that one small mound was built, I was ready to move onto other activities. The sandcastle was soon destroyed by an incoming wave, anyway.
If I had gone to SandCastle Lessons instead, I would have appreciated the art of designing a beautiful castle. Don’t make the same mistakes I did. Book a lesson during your visit to SPI; the family-friendly classes will teach you how to make a sandcastle you can be proud of.
Catch a sunset or sunrise
South Padre offers ample opportunities to watch a scenic landscape of the sun rising in the east or setting in the west. You may even be able to catch the action from your hotel balcony, though several different beach access points will provide you with spectacular views. (Our personal favorite is Public Beach Access #11).
Whether you opt for a sunset or a sunrise is up to you. One requires waking up much earlier, while the other will leave you in darkness after it ends. Or, do as the classic Old El Paso commercial says: “Por qué no los dos?” and see both.
Visit Sea Turtle Inc.
Sea Turtle Inc. protects sea turtles through conservation, applied research, and education. That last one is the most relevant for an SPI visit, since Sea Turtle Inc. hosts plenty of cool events and classes to raise awareness about their efforts.
During the summer, Sea Turtle Inc. hosts summer camps, private feeding sessions, “be a vet” days, and walks through the largest enclosed sea turtle hospital in the world. As of this writing, Sea Turtle Inc. has rehabilitated over 730 turtles and protected nearly 13,500 hatchlings.
Watch a SpaceX launch
SpaceX just launched its IPO on the stock market—and set a record in the process—though their more traditional launches are more entertaining. And South Padre is one of the best spots to see the entire launch, from initial takeoff back to the final touchdown.
Isla Blanca Park and Laguna Madre Bay are some of the best spots for capturing cool photos and videos, the latter boasting angles with incredible reflections off the water. Bring some cash for parking, pick a launch event that works with your schedule, and watch spacecraft take flight.
Cruise for dolphins
Marine life is plentiful in South Padre Island. If you’re a fishing fan, you can bring back a catch to a local shop, and they’ll cook it for you. If that sounds like too much work, a dolphin cruise might be more your speed.
Hundreds of bottlenose dolphins live in Laguna Madre, and several different tours can help you experience them all. The Original Dolphin Watch is one of the highlights, with optional add-ons, such as Eco Tours (to learn more about marine life via visual demonstrations) and snorkeling trips, which give you a chance to see the dolphins from up close.
Take a slingshot neighborhood tour
The architecture of SPI homes is fun to admire. While you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood, life is so much better coming from behind the wheel of a slingshot. These sleek rides can still hit some impressive speeds, and they look more stylish than your traditional sedan or SUV.
Paradise Fun Rentals and SPI Fun both offer slingshots, with varieties that vary based on the number of passengers in your party. As with any rental, a valid driver’s license is required, but then you can hit the open road.
Major summertime events at South Padre Island
You can find something to do during any South Padre visit, though not all weekends are created equal. If you happen to be visiting during one of the below timeframes, you’ll have the chance to experience an extra special event. June 26–29: Que Padre Latin Dance Festival
Que Padre Latin Dance Festival is for those of us who can’t help but groove, with or without music. There are countless opportunities for you to get your dance on, including raucous beach and pool parties, social dancing settings, and silent nighttime raves with headphones along the shore.
Not quite at “So You Think You Can Dance?” levels of skill? Don’t fear; the festival offers several live workshops to help you improve your salsa, bachata, and overall confidence. After all, the best dancers are the ones with the enthusiasm to give it a shot.
July 4: Fourth of July Beach Parade and Fireworks
The Fourth of July is always a terrific celebration, and with this year marking 250 years of the United States, it’ll be an extra joyous occasion. In SPI, the festivities kick off in the morning, with the island’s annual parade along the shore. Mini flags, beads, and juicy watermelon are the perfect accouterments to a patriotic collection of wagons and outfits.
At night, watch the Rio Grande Valley sky get illuminated by a dazzling display of pyrotechnics. The fireworks show along the beach offers spectacular views in a welcoming environment. Head to the beach itself or watch from Bar Louie or Hilton Garden Inn for some of the best seats. Not attending during the Fourth of July? There are still free summer fireworks every Friday and Saturday through Labor Day weekend.
July 29–Aug. 2: Texas International Fishing Tournament
Fishing is a popular activity anytime throughout the year at South Padre, but it’s especially hopping during the summertime. The Texas International Fishing Tournament welcomes over 500 boats and 1,500 anglers over two days of competition, making it the largest saltwater fishing tournament in the state.
Before the official tournament event kicks off, there’s plenty to do, with a captains’ meeting, hospitality social, and playday providing entertainment—and perhaps a chance at a bit of good-natured trash talking. After all, not everyone is going to walk away a champion.
Aug. 7-9: Ladies Kingfish Tournament
The 45th annual Ladies Kingfish Tournament will continue the tradition of one of the largest women-only fishing events in Texas. This weekend, anglers, captains, and their families will descend on SPI to compete in bay and offshore divisions.
Winning anglers receive various custom prizes, including signature tournament awards, such as the prestigious LKT Legacy Award. It’s a celebration of women and fishing, and there’s lots of impressive action out on the water.
Other need-to-know info for a South Padre trip
Whether this is your first trek to South Padre or one of several visits, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Book lodging well in advance: Whether you’re hitting a resort like Isla Grand, family-friendly lodging like La Copa Inn, or staying at an adults-only spot like Upper Deck, other travelers are planning similar adventures in SPI. Make sure to book your lodging well in advance to ensure you get the location you want.
- Getting around: The entire stretch of South Padre Island spans 34 miles, providing ample opportunities to enjoy pristine beaches and coastline. However, the central part of the island, where most people live and visit, covers only 2.69 square miles. While you can certainly rent a car or drive down from another part of Texas, it’s a lot more fun getting around in alternate modes of transportation. Several shops rent bikes, golf carts, slingshots, and scout coupes, giving you a stylish ride much more fitting of the beach life. And don’t forget about the Island Metro, a free shuttle system that runs daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., stopping at restaurants, hotels, and other key points of interest.
- Check the weather conditions: Sure, a weather app can be a decent indicator of what to expect, but why not get an update directly from the source? A handful of live webcams provide an instantaneous look at beach conditions, so you can see if the waters are extra rough, or if you need to bring an umbrella or extra sunscreen.
- Be prepared for a checkpoint: If you’re driving back from South Padre Island, you’ll encounter a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol checkpoint. The Sarita Checkpoint on US-77 North is the most common, though your car may also be stopped at the further-inland Falfurrias checkpoint on US-281 North. Patrol agents will typically ask if you’re a U.S. citizen or are bringing anything unusual back with you, and may check identification, though passports aren’t generally needed for South Padre Island travel. Non-citizens should have permanent resident cards, visas, or other documentation ready to display if need be.
South Padre Island is one of the most unique places in all of Texas. Bring your sunscreen, towels, and sunglasses, and have yourself a fantastic journey.
