Hey hey y’all,
Dallas’ restaurant Beatrice is closing for good on Sunday. The owner says she won’t be able to properly recover from brain tumor surgery while still worrying about the business.
Beatrice has been one of my favorite spots in the city in recent years (I featured it in my Don’t Sleep On series in 2024), serving delicious, thoughtful dishes that honor the owners’ Viet-Cajun roots. The restaurant was the first, and still the only Texas restaurant, to obtain a B-Corporation certification, which requires high levels of social and environmental reporting and transparency.
Let’s send the business out with a bang. If you’re looking for a beautiful meal, make a reservation here. Thanks for the memories, Beatrice!

Lastly, Dickie’s Arena is about to change its name as the Dickie’s parent company no longer wants association with the venue. The Dickie’s management company will need to find a new naming-rights partner. Whataburger Arena? Justin Arena? What business do you think it should be? Weigh in here.

🐄 Screwing things up: A once eradicated pest is rearing its head for the first time in 60 years, as the first case of screwworm has been confirmed in South Texas. The flesh-eating fly poses a threat to cows and Texas’ $15 billion cattle industry by reducing the number of healthy animals and restricting the import of cattle from Mexico, undoubtedly limiting supply and raising the cost of meat. (Texas Tribune)
🚿 Chemical showers: The family of a Texas teen from the town of Trinidad says their daughter suffered chemical burns after several showers in the city’s contaminated water. This is the same town where a woman was arrested and charged last month for posting about the water issues on Facebook. (Fox 4)
🏀 Spurs fan shows out: At least one San Antonio Spurs fan was banned for life at the NBA Finals on Wednesday after storming the court to get a selfie with Victor Wembanyama. Another attendee was banned the same night. If you’re a Spurs fan living in a Mavs world, watch game two with your people at Picadera in Dallas tonight. (Spectrum News)

🍩 Doughnut miss this: It’s National Doughnut Day, and DoorDash recently said these doughnut shops are some of the best in the US, and they’re right here in DFW. Here’s where you can find sweet deals to celebrate the day. (Dallas Observer, NBC 5)
🖼️ An open invitation: The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth announced this week it will offer all visitors on SNAP assistance free entry to the museum, including special galleries. This is part of the Museums for All program, which works to give people access to culture and art regardless of their socioeconomic status. Look here for a map of the 1,600 museums across the country that offer free or reduced admission to those receiving food assistance. (Museums for All)
🎣 There’s no catch: Texas’ annual Free Fishing Day is tomorrow, offering Texas families an opportunity to spend time by the water without having to worry about a fishing license. Click here for fun ways to make the most of the day. (Culture Map Dallas)
