The State Fair of Texas is “the most Texan place on Earth.” (Kevin Brown/State Fair of Texas)

“I’m from Dallas,” I say with a smile when someone asks about my hometown. I can’t help it—growing up in North Texas evokes some of the happiest memories of my life. Cotton candy kisses with my boyfriend at the State Fair, going to musicals with my best friend, and taking my kids to see dinosaur fossils at the Perot Museum. Tiny moments of connection in places that are unlike any other.
But don’t take my word for it. Fall in love with North Texas for yourself by visiting some of the most amazing spots around. From admiring the stunning pumpkin displays at the Dallas Arboretum to finding hidden treasures at the flagship store of Half Price Books, there is something for everyone here.
But be warned: Once you start making Dallas-Fort Worth-sized memories, you’ll never want to leave.
💡 “Woke” born in Dallas? The term “woke” is traced back to a folk and blues singer living in Dallas. Variations of it spread through the 1960s before Dallas’ own Erykah Badu uses the term, quite emphatically, just before it becomes political jargon. Read more here. (D Magazine)
🚁 Firefighting robo-copters: Texas A&M is set to receive $59.8 million from the Texas Legislature to develop autonomous helicopters to fight wildfires in the state. They’ll spend the next two years outfitting four Blackhawks with the self-flying technology. (Culture Map Dallas)
💸 Lean green: UNT could stand to lose $50 million because of the Trump administration’s changes to the visa process, threatening the institution’s 22% international student population. UNT isn’t the only college preparing to lose, though. (Dallas Observer)
Here are some things to do around the metroplex this weekend
