Voting is only one component of being civically active, according to Khanay Turner, executive director of the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute. Cast your ballot and then stay involved by talking policy with elected officials and holding them accountable, she added.
Her comments came during COURIER Texas' "Faith, Freedom, and the Future of Texas" event on Nov. 5 in partnership with Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Houston plans new $16 million homeless resource hub

Houston Mayor John Whitmire hosted a public walkthrough of a new facility that will provide shelter and services for individuals experiencing homelessness.
The facility at 419 Emancipation Avenue includes 225 beds. City officials said it will open in early 2026.
